First Responders

Preparing first responders for the growing number of battery electric vehicles on the roads has been ongoing for several years. Training programs are in place at a federal, state and local level, as well as through auto manufacturers.

NFPA's Electric Vehicle Safety Training Project

The National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Electric Vehicle Safety Training project is a nationwide program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy to provide firefighters and other first responders with information they need to most effectively deal with potential emergency situations involving electric vehicles.

NFPA's website provides training and other resources for first responders, including safety information from hybrid and electric vehicle manufacturers.

CalFire's Alternative Fuel Vehicle's Training Manual

The California Office of the State Fire Marshal has developed a training manual to prepare emergency medical, law enforcement, and fire service personnel for an emergency response involving a wide range of alternative fuels, including battery electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The manual provides an overview of basic alternative fuel vehicle operation, their component parts, infrastructure, and how these technologies affect the standard operating procedures for emergency response personnel.

US DOE's Clean Cities Program Training Videos

The U.S. Department of Energy's Clean Cities program provides a series of videos highlighting training taking place regarding plug-in electric vehicle safety.
